The Young at Heart

Close your eyes. When you hear the phrase, ‘young at heart’ what is the image you see?

For me, it is someone that I knew as a kid. My grandparent‘s neighbor when I was a kid seemed older than I could count. No one seemed to know exactly how old, but no one seemed to remember him not being old.

But beyond his ancientness, there was something else about Mr. Roy.

Mr. Roy had a perpetual smile, especially for kids. And more importantly, for us kids at least, an endless supply of candy.

Mr. Roy would sit on his front porch most afternoons, greeting us after school with. a smile and a wave. We would be invited on his porch and asked questions about our day. We would compare stories of our school days with what he liked to share about his school experience. I…
