Stop Worrying About What’s in Someone’s Underwear Already
Isn’t it strange how some folks are completely obsessed with what’s in my underpants and ensuring I behave congruently?
Gender norms are outdated and limiting.
We don’t have to be confined to a certain box just because of our gender identity, and we should be free to express ourselves however makes us feel most comfortable.
So why do some people still try to police gender norms by questioning what someone is wearing or how they present themselves?
As a female child of the 1980s, expectations were well defined. Expectations of me were formed early with little room for compromise. Girls of the era had few sports opportunities — in fact a new era was just beginning — a new league had begun for girl softball players.
My athletic abilities did not lead me in this direction. Instead, my intellectual abilities led me in the direction of math and a new area called computer programming. I was repeatedly told that girls simply did not have the required mental capacity for this.
Domestication was not for me however. My culinary skills seemed to perpetually result in dismal output.
