Only recently did I consider that vacation and travel we’re not the same thing.

Did you ever consider that these were not the same?

If one were to consider the ‘Dictionary.com’ definition of these words,

  • Vacation: ’a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity, usually used for rest, recreation, or travel; recess or holiday’
  • Travel: ‘to go from one place to another, as by car, train, plane, or ship; take a trip; journey’

Ten years ago began my love affair with travel. It all began simply enough with a vacation.

The trip was to a small all inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya. It was everything that that Riviera Mayan AIs promise. It was endless eating and drinking. It was cheesy shows, themed Mayan spectacles including costume. I was bit by the bug.

Upon returning to the States, we quickly booked our next trip, this time to another area of Mexico, Guadalajara to be exact.

Imaging my surprise and admittedly disappointment when I realized that there was no beach there. There were no costumed locals. There were no service employees to jump at my every whim. I was disillusioned. Imagine my surprise at learning what authentic Mexico was.

After the shock wore off, I found my self in love with the charm, grace, and hospitality of the region. The beauty of the cathedrals. The lovely buildings. The kindness and patient of the…
