For decades, Republicans styled themselves as the party of “law and order.”

It was a cornerstone of their political brand — from Nixon’s Southern Strategy to Reagan’s war on drugs to Bush-era tough-on-crime policies. The message was simple: respect the police, punish the lawbreakers, and never excuse violence.

But that was then.

Now, in the age of MAGA, that same party defends violent insurrectionists, attacks federal law enforcement, and treats criminal indictments like partisan inconveniences. The GOP’s commitment to “law and order” was never about justice — it was about control. And now that the law threatens them, they’ve turned on it.
