GOP Dodging the Truth on Their Heritage: “It Was About Slavery”
The confederacy demanded that you own your ancestors. Period. Do not allow the GOP to dilute the issue. Not state rights, government overreach, or an attack on a way of life.
As we continue to grapple with the ongoing issues of systemic racism and white supremacy in our country, it is important to also acknowledge the role that the Republican Party has played in perpetuating these harmful ideologies.
Despite their attempts to distance themselves from their past, the truth remains: the GOP was founded on the platform of preserving slavery.
The confederacy, which many Republicans still hold dear as part of their heritage, was built on the idea that owning other human beings was not only acceptable but necessary for their way of life.
The Civil War was not fought over states’ rights or economic issues, as some may try to argue. It was a battle between those who believed in the basic human right of freedom for all and those who saw people of color as nothing more than property.
