In recent years, the Gulf Cartel, a powerful organized crime syndicate based in Mexico, has been associated with the kidnapping and murder of American citizens.

The majority of kidnappings committed by the cartel occur along highways that connect major cities with tourist destinations such as Cancun and Tulum. Victims are typically abducted at random or targeted due to their perceived wealth or political connections.

Once kidnapped, victims are often held for ransom or used as leverage in negotiations between rival criminal groups. The cartel is known for its brutality and willingness to use extreme violence against those who fail to comply with their demands.
