Our microbiome contains bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms that play a pivotal role in keeping us healthy. It helps break down food and convert it into energy, produces vitamins necessary for good health, and plays an important role in our immune system.

The microbiome—the large number of microorganisms living in and on your body—has been the focus of a huge amount of research lately.

And with good reason: scientists are beginning to realize just how powerful gut health and nutrition can be when it comes to overall health.

First of all, what is the microbiome? The microbiome is made up of over 100 trillion bacterial cells living in or on your body. This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even archaea (hit the link to learn more), the oldest known organisms in existence!
