February is Black History Month, and it’s an important reminder to celebrate the past contributions of African-Americans in the United States.

But how can you ensure that your celebration is sincere and meaningful?

It can be easy to slip into hypocrisy when we honor an important cause or event without truly understanding its implications. Here are some tips on how to celebrate Black History Month without being a hypocrite.

Be Informed and Educate Yourself
The first step to celebrating Black History Month in an informed way is learning about black history itself.

If you are like me, you were not educated on much of our country’s history. We were not educated about Juneteenth, Black Wall Street, or the Harlem Renaissance. We missed the depth and contours of our history and we are worse for it.
