I agree with your premise that travel is essentially a form of escapism. The challenge would appear to be in pushing through this to another level of appreciation of travel.

I see my early enjoyment of travel as escapism, but I know find that I have found other gains. I find that travel is an educational experience, a lesson in cultural appreciation, and a sermon in finding my inner peace — particularly in a crowded airport with a delayed or cancelled flight.
