For most of my life, I believed I lived in the greatest nation in the world. The United States was a beacon of democracy, a place where the Constitution mattered, civil rights were fought for and protected, and the rule of law was respected. It wasn’t perfect, but our system was designed to improve over time and strive toward that “more perfect union” our Founders envisioned.

Then Donald Trump became president.

Suddenly, the country I knew began to unravel. The Constitution became an afterthought, treated like a nuisance rather than the foundation of our democracy. Civil rights, particularly for women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community, were under relentless attack. Corruption ran rampant, and institutions that once served as guardrails against authoritarianism crumbled under the…
