Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative from Georgia, recently called for a national divorce in response to President Biden’s plan to tackle climate change, among other things.
The statement has been met with ridicule and reality— and it raises the question of who would get custody of the kids?
Let’s take this hypothetical seriously for a moment.
Who would get custody? Would it be the red states or the blue states?
Would there be legal battles over who gets control of certain resources?
What about taxes?
Who would have to foot the bill?
What about things like Social Security and healthcare — who would have jurisdiction over those issues if the country was split in half? These are all questions that need to be considered before trying to pull off such an undertaking.
