Sandra Day O’Connor, born in 1930, was a pioneer for female leaders.

In 1981, she became the first female justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court. As a result, she not only changed the face of the court but also paved the way for women to enter traditionally male-dominated fields.

As a young girl in the 1980s, I expected that I would follow a certain path.

My path was to graduate school, find a suitable husband to take care of me, and begin procreation.

My desire for a career was mocked.

My hopes of professional success resulted in eye rolls and patronizing comments.

I was expected to learn my place.

Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court. It was a game-changer.
