So You’re Against DEI? Tell Me — Is It Diversity, Equity, or Inclusion That Bothers You Most?

The right-wing assault on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has reached a fever pitch, spurred on by the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on anything that promotes fairness or progress. DEI programs—meant to foster workplaces and communities where everyone has a fair shot—are now being painted as some existential threat. But let’s be real: why?

If DEI is so dangerous, what exactly are its critics afraid of? Is it diversity—the idea that our schools, workplaces, and public institutions should reflect the actual demographics of the country? Is it equity—acknowledging that systemic barriers exist and that absolute fairness means addressing them, not ignoring them? Or is it inclusion—the radical notion that everyone, regardless of race, gender, or background, deserves a place at the table?
