My feable attempts to learn Spanish is often returned with knowing smiles, yet my friends in Puerto Vallarta seem to appreciate the efforts.

So you’re traveling to a new country and want to fit in with the locals. You’ve been told that speaking Spanglish is the best way to do this.

But what exactly is Spanglish? And should you even use it if you can’t fluently speak both Spanish and English?

Let’s break down the dilemma of speaking Spanglish.

What Is Spanglish?

Spanglish is a combination of Spanish and English, often used by people who are bilingual or have some knowledge of both languages.

It takes elements from each language and combines them together, creating a unique dialect that has become more and more popular over the years. In its most basic form, it involves taking words from one language and inserting them into sentences in another language.
