The Supreme Court is Out of Step with Our Democracy
Holding an office for life after an appointment, with no electoral process involved is hardly aligned with democratic values. How do we are modern day voters remedy this situation?
We can demand that our elected representatives nominate Supreme Court Justices with a demonstrated commitment to upholding democratic values.
At the same time, we must continue to protect the basic Constitutional rights and civil liberties of all Americans regardless of political affiliation.
Only then will our democracy be in line with its promise.
We must ensure that decisions made by the Supreme Court are accountable to the people.
This means allowing for greater public input on decisions that affect our daily lives, including issues such as voter rights and healthcare regulation. We must strive for a system where justices are held to standards of transparency and public accountability like other public servants in government. We need to take steps to ensure the Supreme Court works for the people and by the people, not just within its own chambers.
It is only when we take these steps that our democratic values may truly be upheld.
