As Americans, we are all too familiar with the fear and terror caused by terrorist attacks.

We have seen the pictures of destruction in Paris, London, and Madrid; we have heard the heartbreaking stories of tragedy in New York City, Boston, and Orlando. But what about those acts of terrorism that happen right here at home?

It’s time to confront the uncomfortable truth: domestic terrorism is a very real threat to our nation and it’s time to take serious steps to address it.

White Supremacists are on the Rise

The recent surge in white supremacist activity has been well-documented, yet many people refuse to accept that this type of extremism is a form of domestic terrorism.

White supremacists are emboldened by an increasingly tolerant society towards their views and by a past president and other political allies, and leaders who refuses to denounce them outright. Furthermore, many states do not consider hate crimes as acts of terrorism — even when they meet the legal definition for such offenses — which means perpetrators often go unpunished.
