When Democracy does not work for you: Change the Rules to Rig the Game

Ohio Bill takes the big loss in Issue 1 and uses the standard Republican strategy: when they lose, they manipulate to stay in power.

In the United States, we imagine important decisions are left to voters to decide.

Given the choice of an issue, we believe that, as citizens, we vote to decide. When the majority of voters are in favor of a change, vote for it; it then becomes law. Period.

Sadly, the Republican Party missed this in their high school government class. The GOP has developed a strategy in which losing ideas are not abandoned. Instead, their strategy is to change the rules of the game.

Recently, an issue was taken to the voters of Ohio in a special election.

The Ohio GOP attempts to prevent a change popular with the majority of voters by amending the state Constitution to enshrine a woman’s right to reproductive autonomy.

A 60% to 40% majority effectively defeated Issue 1.

Rather than accept defeat gracefully, the Ohio GOP put their heads together and is now attempting to change the state’s election laws.
