In recent years, the rhetoric around “protecting” children has taken center stage in American politics. Republican lawmakers have been quick to rally against perceived threats to the moral fabric of society, with drag shows and LGBTQ+ content often finding themselves in the crosshairs.

Yet, when it comes to a far more tangible and deadly threat — guns — the same lawmakers are conspicuously silent. The hypocrisy is as staggering as it is dangerous, and it raises an uncomfortable question: Why do we protect our children against drag shows but not guns?
