So what is ‘woke’ anyway?

It’s quite amusing how the conservative media and MAGA love to throw around the term “woke” as if it’s some sort of insult.

They seem to believe that being aware of social issues and advocating for social justice is a bad thing. The problem with their argument is that they don’t seem to know what the term “woke” means. So, let’s break it down and explore the conservative obsession with this word.

What is Woke?

First and foremost, “woke” is a term that originated in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and refers to being aware of systemic racism and social injustice.

Since then, a larger audience has adopted it to include a general awareness of social issues. This term is anything but negative; it represents a conscious effort to become better educated and more mindful of the world around us.

The conservative media has taken this term and turned it into a derogatory insult as if being aware of the world around us is something to be ashamed of.
